SPECIAL OLYMPICS IN ANTIGONISH BENEFITS FROM FEDERAL FUNDS

When the Special Olympics arrived in Antigonish, it marked the first time the games were held outside of an urban centre, drawing thousands of athletes, coaches, and spectators.

We’ve invested $16 million over four years, with $2 million each year thereafter to support the Special Olympics for years to come.

Our government recognizes the value of sport in our communities, no bigger event has been hosted in Antigonish than the Special Olympics. We are supporting athletes from coast to coast to coast. Apart from showcasing world-class athletes, our community also saw a huge economic benefit as businesses, hotels, restaurants, and stores all saw more customers. In total, the economic impact of the games in Antigonish was over $8.7 million dollars over the course of just two weeks.

Congratulations to the organizers of this phenomenal event. You’ve proven we can do big things in small communities.
