NEW FISHERIES ACT ENSHRINES PROTECTIONS FOR OWNER/OPERATOR MODEL

CHANGES IN RULES WILL BENEFIT LOCAL FISHERY FOR GENERATIONS

After hearing from fishermen and women on our shores, our government has directly addressed one of the greatest threats to the local fishery, which is the potential takeover by large corporate interests. The owner-operator model and fleet separation has served the inshore fishery well and now has protection built into legislation. New rules will prohibit large companies and foreign interests from taking over the inshore fishery so the benefits of this strategically important sector remain in our communities.
