Since 1967, toxic waste has been pumped into Boat Harbour, or A’sek as it is known to Pictou Landing First Nation.

Prior to its use as an effluent treatment facility, A’sek was a saltwater habitat for wildlife and was used by Mi’kmaq people for recreation, food, and shelter. It’s a place where the community gathered ceremonial and medicinal herbs for thousands of years and would seek refuge when government officials came to the community to take children from their families to be placed in the Indian Residential School system.

The remediation project will restore the natural flow of water between the ocean and the harbour and will create many good paying jobs during the course of the project.
